House Training Shih Tzu Puppies
There are a lot of different methods you can use to house train your Shih Tzu puppy. Some people use pee mats, others use a crate and others simply prefer to take the puppy outside when it is time for the puppy to go. Although the name potty training is used , I have never seen a pot used for this purpose .
However, it does not matter what method you use, as long as you understand the underlying principles. Once you understand these principles your job will become much easier.
Introduce the puppy to his potty area on his first day
Dogs have a very strong sense of smell and if the dog can smell urine he will keep going back to that specific area to relieve himself. It is therefore important to train the puppy to use your preferred area as early as possible so he can go back to that specific area.
Have patience and expect accidents to happen
Puppies, like small babies, do not have the bladder control of an adult. It is unfair to expect your puppy not to have an accident. They do and it will happen. Your job is to minimize the occurrence of these events by acting in a pro-active manner. When accidents do happen neutralize the area immediately, but never rub the dog’s face in it or smack the dog. The puppy is too small to know what he has done wrong. Luckily Shih Tzu are small dogs and the mishap does not leave a very big mess.
Know your dog’s body language
Before most puppies want to relieve themselves there are certain signs. There may be a certain amount of shaking or the puppy may crouch. When you spot this it is important to pick up the puppy and to take him to his preferred area.
Reprimand and affirm
Use your voice to control your puppy’s behavior. Your Shih Tzu puppy should learn to associate certain tones of voice with unacceptable behavior. Just as you use your voice in a negative tone to show your displeasure, you should use your voice to show the puppy when you are happy with his behavior. A little bit of praise can go a long way!
Know your dog’s routine
It is more likely that your Shih Tzu puppy will relieve herself during certain times of the day. Early in the morning when she wakes up and late at night before she goes to bed are two of these times.
Another time is about half an hour after the puppy has eaten and after the puppy drank water. If the puppy is slow to go after she has eaten a little bit of exercise can help to expedite the matter.
It is well worth the effort in time to potty train your puppy. A little bit of time early on can establish a habit for the rest of your dog’s life.
